But we’ve been providing coding bootcamp scholarships for many years. Below, read about some of our scholarship recipients from October 2020.
Iman Williams, Remote – Software Engineering
Iman Williams is an Emory University alumna and tech founder from Baltimore, Maryland. After graduating, she founded Accessible Employment, an inclusively-designed platform for people to share anonymous reviews about accessibility at the workplace. After founding her company, Iman began learning how to code and design inclusively.
Iman’s goal as a professional software engineer is to make accessible, inclusive design and development an industry standard. In her free time, Iman enjoys reading about economic history, cooking traditional Ethiopian food, and practicing Mandarin.
Saba Teklu, Denver – Software Engineering
Saba is a first-generation Ethiopian-American from Aurora, CO. In 2013, she graduated from the University of Colorado, Denver with a B.S. in Business Administration. With an entrepreneurial spirit, she has always feverishly searched for the next best challenge. From co-founding Sheba Roastery- a micro-batch coffee company, to diving headfirst into compliance for a cryptocurrency startup in Brooklyn, there is no obstacle that could hinder her drive to continue learning. In her most recent work at a local nonprofit, Saba further realized the gap between marginalized communities and tech. Saba has now made it her mission to join the small sector of women of color in software engineering and to become an access point for others in her community.
Kiara Hearn, Austin – Data Science
Born and raised by a single mom in Dallas, Texas, Kiara Hearn is an alumna of Yale University where she was a Humanities major, studying the rich histories and diverse cultures of Japan, China, Taiwan, and South Korea. Since returning to the Dallas area, she has worked to improve access to education and financial freedom for people of color and low-income families in her community. Most recently, she made the switch to a career in tech as an early engineer at Outreach Grid, a data platform designed to understand the state of homelessness in partner cities and deliver better and faster care to those in need.
In her free time, Kiara enjoys reading, baking, watching Korean dramas, and listening to true crime podcasts. Kiara is excited to make the leap into data science and build data-informed and data-powered solutions to build a more sustainable and equitable future.
